Thinking about trying Brazilian Jiu Jitsu as an adult in Easton, MD? You are not alone — and you are not too old, too out of shape, or too late. Here is exactly what to expect walking into your first BJJ class at THE LAB Martial Arts and Fitness Center, so you can show up prepared and get the most out of it.
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a grappling art — no striking. You learn how to control an opponent using leverage, positioning, and submissions from the ground. Adults come to it for very different reasons:
THE LAB is led by John Givens, a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Black Belt in the Robson Moura lineage — which means beginner instruction here is grounded in one of the world’s most respected BJJ lineages, not watered down.
Do not buy anything before your first class. Come with:
Take a shower and clip your nails before class — both are basic BJJ etiquette. If you have long hair, tie it back.
Come in, meet the coach, sign a waiver, and get a quick tour of the 2,000+ sq ft facility at 26 Creamery Lane. Ask questions — the coaches want beginners to feel welcome.
Light jogging, movement drills, and BJJ-specific movement (shrimping, technical stand-ups, breakfalls). Go at your own pace. Nobody is judging your first-day cardio.
The coach demonstrates 1–2 core techniques for the day — usually a control position, an escape, or a foundational submission. You’ll pair up with a partner and drill it slowly, focusing on the sequence, not on winning.
New beginners typically do not spar full-speed on day one. You’ll either drill more, do a light positional exchange, or watch a controlled roll while asking questions. When you do start sparring (often called “rolling”), you’ll be paired with a higher belt who protects you.
Cool-down, stretching, and time to ask the coach anything.
You do not need to “get in shape before starting BJJ.” That is a myth. BJJ gets you in shape. First-class cardio is universally rough for everyone — including people who lift weights and run 5Ks. That’s normal. Two weeks in, your body starts to adapt. Two months in, you’ll be shocked how much easier it feels.
At THE LAB, the beginner curriculum focuses on position and control before submissions. Higher belts are trained to protect training partners, not to “win” against a beginner. Injuries happen mostly when people ignore the tap or ego out — both of which are strongly discouraged here. Tap early, tap often, and you’ll train for years.
No. At THE LAB we regularly welcome adult beginners in their 30s, 40s, 50s, and 60s. BJJ is uniquely well-suited to older adults because it rewards leverage and technique over strength and speed. Some of the best training partners in a room are 45-year-olds who have been doing this for a decade.
No pressure. If you loved it, we’ll walk you through membership options and getting a gi. If you didn’t, we thank you for coming in. Either way, you tried something new.
The first class is free. That’s the whole barrier to entry.
