Adult Beginner BJJ in Easton — What to Expect Your First Class

Thinking about trying Brazilian Jiu Jitsu as an adult in Easton, MD? You are not alone — and you are not too old, too out of shape, or too late. Here is exactly what to expect walking into your first BJJ class at THE LAB Martial Arts and Fitness Center, so you can show up prepared and get the most out of it.

Why Adult Beginners Choose BJJ

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a grappling art — no striking. You learn how to control an opponent using leverage, positioning, and submissions from the ground. Adults come to it for very different reasons:

  • Practical self-defense that works whether you are 150 lbs or 220 lbs
  • An intense workout that never feels like the gym
  • A hobby that keeps them mentally sharp — BJJ is often called “physical chess”
  • Community and stress relief

THE LAB is led by John Givens, a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Black Belt in the Robson Moura lineage — which means beginner instruction here is grounded in one of the world’s most respected BJJ lineages, not watered down.

What to Wear (and Bring) to Your First Class

Do not buy anything before your first class. Come with:

  • Athletic shorts — no zippers, buttons, or pockets (they scratch training partners)
  • A plain t-shirt or rashguard
  • A water bottle
  • Flip-flops or sandals — you’ll walk to and from the mat with them; BJJ is trained barefoot on the mat

Take a shower and clip your nails before class — both are basic BJJ etiquette. If you have long hair, tie it back.

The First 60 Minutes: Step by Step

1. Arrive 10–15 minutes early

Come in, meet the coach, sign a waiver, and get a quick tour of the 2,000+ sq ft facility at 26 Creamery Lane. Ask questions — the coaches want beginners to feel welcome.

2. Warm-up (~10 minutes)

Light jogging, movement drills, and BJJ-specific movement (shrimping, technical stand-ups, breakfalls). Go at your own pace. Nobody is judging your first-day cardio.

3. Technique instruction (~20 minutes)

The coach demonstrates 1–2 core techniques for the day — usually a control position, an escape, or a foundational submission. You’ll pair up with a partner and drill it slowly, focusing on the sequence, not on winning.

4. Positional or light rolling (~15–20 minutes)

New beginners typically do not spar full-speed on day one. You’ll either drill more, do a light positional exchange, or watch a controlled roll while asking questions. When you do start sparring (often called “rolling”), you’ll be paired with a higher belt who protects you.

5. Wind-down and questions

Cool-down, stretching, and time to ask the coach anything.

The Truth About Being “In Shape” First

You do not need to “get in shape before starting BJJ.” That is a myth. BJJ gets you in shape. First-class cardio is universally rough for everyone — including people who lift weights and run 5Ks. That’s normal. Two weeks in, your body starts to adapt. Two months in, you’ll be shocked how much easier it feels.

What About Getting Injured?

At THE LAB, the beginner curriculum focuses on position and control before submissions. Higher belts are trained to protect training partners, not to “win” against a beginner. Injuries happen mostly when people ignore the tap or ego out — both of which are strongly discouraged here. Tap early, tap often, and you’ll train for years.

Am I Too Old?

No. At THE LAB we regularly welcome adult beginners in their 30s, 40s, 50s, and 60s. BJJ is uniquely well-suited to older adults because it rewards leverage and technique over strength and speed. Some of the best training partners in a room are 45-year-olds who have been doing this for a decade.

What Happens After the First Class

No pressure. If you loved it, we’ll walk you through membership options and getting a gi. If you didn’t, we thank you for coming in. Either way, you tried something new.
